Transportation Planning

Huntersville places a premium on proactive planning, multimodal solutions, innovative funding, and transportation decisions that align with growth and development expectations. The Town continues to emphasize connectivity that disperses local traffic over a broad network of smaller sized streets that are designed based on the surrounding land use context rather than relying on a few traffic-centric major roadways.

The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Town of Huntersville and the Charlotte Urbanized Area.   Federal legislation requires Urbanized Areas with populations larger than 50,000 to have an MPO, whose primary function is to carry out the transportation planning process among the member jurisdictions within its established planning area boundary.

Town of Huntersville Planning Staff participates as a member of CRTPO. Through this organization a number of plans, which are listed below, are created to work in conjunction with the State Transportation Improvement Plan (STIP) and our local Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
