Project description & purpose

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposed to reconfigure the I-77 and N.C. 73 (Sam Furr Road) interchange.  The purpose of this project is to improve mobility and connectivity for local traffic accessing properties adjacent to this interchange. A secondary purpose is to reduce delay and congestion on N.C. 73 through the I-77/N.C. 73 interchange.

The new interchange design is called a "split diamond."  As a part of this design, the existing ramps will remain in approximately their same locations, and two new east-west bridges will be added across I-77.  The northern crossing will connect with the I-77 ramps with roundabouts on both sides.  On the east end, the roundabout will also connect to Caldwell Creek Drive.  Two alternatives for the eastern roundabout, a four and five leg roundabout, are under consideration.

The southern crossing will connect Northcross Drive and U.S. 21 (Statesville Road), using a loop on the west side and a roundabout on the east side.  Drivers using the I-77 northbound off-ramp will have the choice to access the new crossing or to proceed directly N.C. 73.

On N.C. 73 (Sam Furr Road), an additional eastbound through lane is proposed.  With this additional lane, as well as needed turn lanes and potential multi-modal facilities, the bridge is proposed to be widened.

This project is scheduled to begin right-of-way acquisition in fiscal year (FY) 2019 and construction in FY 2020.

Pedestrian and Bike accommodations are being considered as part of this project contingent on a cost-share agreement between NCDOT and Huntersville.
