Caldwell Rosenwald School, 15435 NC Hwy73, was constructed in 1925 to serve African American children in the Lemley community of North Mecklenburg County. The cost of construction was $5,200; of that, $1,100 was paid by the Rosenwald Fund, $3,500 by the public, and $600 by the African-American community (Fisk University 2001). Today, the building is used as a retail store but remains recognizable as a Rosenwald School due to its architectural design.
