While a student at Blythe Elementary, Mongai Fankam launched the No Backpack Day movement to raise awareness of the millions of children who walk to school with their books in their hands or in plastic bags. The program now has 40 schools throughout Mecklenburg County participating and has distributed more than 40,000 backpacks to children throughout the United States, Canada, and 20 African countries. Fankam has received national and international awards for her work and was named as the youngest of QCity Metro's Great 28-Black Charlotteans Who Are Shaping Charlotte in 2021.
