In 1891 Virgin Cotton Mill erected a mill and before it opened in 1894 was sold to Anchor Mills. The mill, a major employer of the area and key to its growth, originally manufactured yarns and later textile housewares. Throughout its operation the mill changed owners from Carolina Mills, Trenton Mills to Magla Products - before burning beyond repair in 1992, The mill's water tower still stands and is visible off Main and 4th Streets.
