1. What is the Adopt-A-Park Program?

Huntersville Parks and Recreation’s Adopt-A-Park (AAP) Program is designed to encourage the community be hands-on in helping keep Huntersville’s parks clean, safe and attractive. This program creates a framework under which citizens, citizen groups/agencies and organizations can contribute to the Town by "adopting" a park, and agreeing to improve it through litter pick-up, maintaining flower beds, painting, spreading playground mulch and other manual labor. The program also offers the opportunity for people to get more involved in their community in a way that promotes civic pride, appreciation and awareness.

Currently Huntersville Parks and Recreation manages over 400 acres of parkland in 10 parks. The assistance we receive from adopters’ is invaluable as we make every effort to care for our natural resources.

2. Who can participate?

The AAP program is open to individuals / groups throughout the Town of Huntersville that are interested in bettering our parks:

• Any individuals
• Athletics organizations
• Business and other community organizations
• Civic groups
• Faith based organizations
• Neighborhood associations
• Schools (groups and teams)
• Service organizations
• Youth groups

The Town of Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department (HPRD) provide routine park maintenance and repairs. The adopting individuals and organizations give the park or trail the extra care and attention it needs. Adopters share in improving and enhancing the Town’s parks by working on a variety of approved projects. Adopters have assisted with numerous cleanup, landscaping and facility improvement projects.

3. What is the Adopt-A-Park time commitment?

Each year, the adoption commitment begins at the beginning of a quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1) and lasts for a period of one or two years. Adopting individual/organizations are asked to make a one-year commitment to their park or trail completing a minimum of four (4) projects per year. However, applications may be taken during the year and the number of expected cleanup project may be prorated according to the adoption approval date. It is each Adopted Park’s contact person’s responsibility to organize four yearly clean-ups and keep track of the group’s total volunteer hours and clean-up supplies, which are provided by Huntersville Parks and Recreation Departmen (HPRD) for each Adopted Park. 

In addition, it is the responsibility of the Adopted Parks’ contact person to:

1. Inform the AAP Coordinator of your scheduled cleanup date no less than two (2) weeks in advance so that arrangements can be made for trash removal, and we can let you know of any potential conflicts
2. Pick up litter / debris and place the filled trash bags in the designated areas
3. Adhere to the Safety Guidelines as provided to you by the AAP Coordinator
4. Report any vandalism or potential safety hazards found in your adopted space
5. Complete and return AAP Progress Report, Volunteer Applications, Photos and Volunteer Service Record within 14 days of project completion. These can be returned in person, by mail or electronically.

4. What about Special Projects?

In addition, any requests to perform special projects that will materially change adopted space, such as landscaping or facility improvements, should be submitted to the AAP Coordinator in writing at least one month in advance of the desired project date. We are excited that you wish to improve the park, and we want to work with you to ensure that your efforts leave a lasting positive effect. 

The appropriate Town departments will review your request to ensure that the project complies with applicable safety, environmental, and legal restrictions; that it is consistent with the overall design, use, and maintenance of the park or trail, and that the date does not conflict with activities scheduled for the facility. The AAP Coordinator will respond to your organization with required guidelines for that special project.

5. What about equipment?

Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department (HPRD) provides:

• Recycling information
• Safety guidelines
• Trash and recycling bags
• Trash removal

Work gloves, long pants and boots are recommended.

6. How will my adoption be recognized?

A service a sign will be displayed in a prominent part of the adopted park acknowledging your organization's / individual service to the parks. 

Adopters can also be issued Certificates of Appreciation, have their agency / organization or individual name highlighted on Huntersville Parks and Recreation Department's (HPRD) website and letters of recognition written on behalf of the adopter by the department’s director.

7. How do I get started?

If you are a group, appoint a contact person to ensure clear communication. Contact the Adopt-A-Park program coordinator to discuss the parks and trails currently available for adoption and any questions you may have about the program. Complete the Adopt-A-Park Adopting Application (PDF) with the AAP Coordinator for the specific park or trail you wish to adopt. Register your volunteers, contact the coordinator to schedule your first event and reserve any equipment or supplies you may need. At the event, review the Safety Guidelines and instructions for where to leave trash and recycling with your volunteers.

1. Do I need to submit a Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA) for my land development project?

As part of the submittal process, you will need to submit a TIA Determination of Need form.  An evaluation of this form will determine whether you are required to complete a Traffic Impact Analysis for your project.  

2. How do I apply for new development construction?

1. What number do I call if I have an emergency?

Please call 911 for all emergencies. Know your address and what the emergency is. We will be dispatched promptly. 

2. Are Huntersville Fire Department Stations staffed at all times?

Yes, all four fire stations are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by certified North Carolina Firefighters/Emergency Medical Technicians. 

3. I see a fire hydrant flowing water, what do I do?

Fire hydrants are the responsibility of Charlotte Water. If you see a hydrant flowing water, with no utility crew in immediate vicinity doing work, we ask that you call 311 or 704-336-7600 and report the issue. Frequently, Charlotte Water will flow water, from fire hydrants, to improve water quality and clarity. 

4. Can HFD visit a local school?

Yes, you can arrange for a Huntersville Fire truck and crew to visit your school for fire prevention education. Please visit our 'Community Services Booking' page for more information. 

5. Does Huntersville Fire Department provide medical standy-bys for events?

Yes, you can hire Huntersville Fire Department employees (off duty) to work as an Emergency Medical Technician at your event (5k, triathlons, public gatherings, events, etc.). Simply contact our events staff at: events@huntersvillefd.com to learn the process and pricing.

6. Can residents use a fire pit?

Yes, residents are able to use small commercially purchased fire pits for recreational fires (such as fire pits for entertainment, warming or cooking). Large open fires and the burning of debris and/or trash is NOT permitted. Please visit the 'Outdoor Burning and Grilling Regulations Page' for more information.

7. What agency provides fire inspections/fire code enforcement?

1. Accessory Dwelling/Mother-In-Law Suites

Can I build an accessory dwelling or mother-in-law suite?

• Many zoning districts permit accessory dwelling uses. To determine if your parcel is eligible, please review Article 9.1 of the Zoning Ordinance and submit your address or parcel ID to Ask A Planner.

Do I need a building permit for an accessory dwelling?

• Yes. All accessory dwellings require building permits. Building permits and issued through Mecklenburg County.

Where do I get a residential or commercial building permit?

• Building permits and issued through Mecklenburg County.

Do I need a building permit for... 

• Decks, swimming pools, and accessory dwelling units all require building permits.
• Sheds/Storage buildings are also known as accessory structures. If any dimension of a shed is greater than 12 feet, or if the total area of the structure is greater than 144 square feet, then a building permit is required.  If all dimensions of a shed are less than or equal to 12 feet and the area of the structure is less than or equal to 144 square feet under you will only need a Zoning Use Permit. 
• At-grade concrete or paver patios do not require building permits. 
  • We recommend you review Impervious restrictions to see if this applies to your property.

Do I need a zoning permit?

• All items that require a building permit will automatically be routed by Mecklenburg County to Huntersville for zoning approval, please review the ’notes’ in the Mecklenburg Permitting system for any requests for additional information. 
• If your project does not require a building permit, it may require a zoning permit. Common zoning permits are for sheds, home-based businesses, family care homes, mobile food sales, home daycares, temporary seasonal markets, construction trailers, and commercial change of use. This list does not include all items that may require a zoning permit. To inquire if your project requires a zoning permit contact us at permits@huntersville.org. 

4. Business License

Do I need a business license? 

• The Town of Huntersville does not require business licenses. 
• If you need a letter indicating that no business licenses are required, you may request that at planning@huntersville.org

Who do I discuss a commercial upfit with?

• Commercial Customers who are interested in constructing new buildings or upfitting an existing building for a new use will need to contact the Huntersville Planning Department 704-875-7000 about the Commercial Site Plan review process and/or the Change of Use process for Land Development before beginning the building permit process with Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement

What are the commercial building codes?

How do I locate the zoning of a property? 

• Visit the project map > Select the Zoning Map tab > Type in the address or parcel ID > Click on the identified parcel and the pop-up box will indicate the zoning. Note that some pop-up boxes have an arrow to navigate to multiple pages of information regarding the parcel. 

What are the permitted uses for a zoning?

• When you have identified the zoning for a parcel (see question above), then visit the Interactive Zoning Ordinances, Article 3.2 General Districts and identify the corresponding zoning district abbreviation. All information related to permitted uses can be found here. 

6. Decks

Does a deck count as impervious area?

• Open slatted decking, a deck surface constructed of boards (wood or composite wood) with intermittent gaps that allow water to pass through to the surface below. Only open, uncovered decks installed over a permeable surface (dirt, no concrete or gravel) do not count towards your built-upon calculations. If the decking is not slatted or it is placed over an impervious surface, then it is considered impervious. 

What size deck can I install?

• Please review Article 8.8.9. If you would like assistance reviewing your proposed structures please contact us at Ask A Planner with your parcel ID or address and the size and type of deck you are proposing. 

Do I need a building permit for a deck?

• Yes, all decks are load bearing structures and require a building permit. Building permits are issued by Mecklenburg County. 

Are there setbacks for a deck?

• Yes. Decks are subject to the same setbacks as the home. 

7. Fences

How tall can my fence be? 

• Please review Article 8.11 for Zoning Ordinance requirements relative to height, materials and placement.

Do I need a permit for a fence?

• Fences do not require a permit.  

What are the setbacks for a fence?

• Most fences do not require a setback. To confirm your parcel please review Article 8.11 or contact us at Ask A Planner.

Can I place a fence in an easement?

• Staff does not recommend placing a fence in easements.

8. Home Based Businesses

What are the conditions for a home-based business?

The conditions are outlined in Article 9.19 of the Huntersville Zoning Ordinance.

Do I need a permit to operate a home-based business in Huntersville? 

• Complete the zoning permit application and submit it to permits@huntersville.org
• Pay the zoning fee

Do I need a business license? 

• The Town of Huntersville does not require business licenses. 
• If you need a letter indicating that no business licenses are required, you may request that at planning@huntersville.org

9. Impervious Area or Built-Upon Area

What does impervious area refer to?

• Watch the video from Mecklenburg County and the Town of Huntersville to learn more. 
• Impervious Surface means a surface that because of its composition and/or its use impedes the natural infiltration of water. 

Why do we have impervious restrictions? 

• State and local regulations (specifically water supply watershed protection ordinances and postconstruction ordinances) protect streams and lakes in Mecklenburg County from pollution by restricting activities in the land areas that drain to them. Built-upon area (also called impervious area) is a source of pollution that is controlled by these regulations. Pollutants, such as oil and chemicals, deposited on these surfaces wash straight to creeks and lakes in runoff during rain events causing negative water quality impacts.  

What materials are considered impervious?

• Built-upon area is defined as both impervious and partially impervious cover including buildings, pavement, gravel, recreational facilities (tennis courts, etc.) but does not include wooden slatted decks and the water area of a swimming pool.

Do all properties have impervious restrictions? 

• Built-upon area restrictions apply to all properties located in water supply watershed restriction areas and most all other properties in Mecklenburg County. Properties developed in Huntersville after July 1, 2007, are likely subject to built-upon area restrictions. Click HERE to view a map of the area impacted by impervious restrictions.

How do I determine if my property has impervious restrictions? 

• To determine if a property is located in a water supply watershed restriction area, go to http://charmeck.org (select “Departments”, select “Geospatial Information Services”, select “POLARIS 3G”). Enter the property address or PID in the search field (upper left corner) and select “Floodplain, Zoning & Watershed Info” at the lower-left portion of the screen. If a “Watershed Class” such as PA or Ca is indicated under the heading “Watershed District” at the bottom left portion of the screen, then the property is located in a water supply watershed restriction area and is likely subject to the built-upon area requirements. To view the specific watershed ordinances and guidelines, click on “Detailed Information” at the bottom left portion of the screen
• If a property is located in a subdivision, the maximum built upon area allocated to that property can be obtained from the approved recorded plat, which is sometimes available by using the “Legal Desc.” link on the left side of the screen in POLARIS under the property address. This will take you to the Register of Deeds website for viewing of the recorded plat. While viewing the recorded plat you will see on the left-hand side of the page a “Related Documents” link. Click this link to see if there is a revised plat that may include changes to allotted impervious restrictions. The revised plat will be noted as MAP/R. Should you want to go back to the previous plat click the back button. If the property in question is not located in a subdivision or if the subdivision was approved prior to the effective date of the regulation, then the maximum allowed built upon area can be obtained by reviewing the applicable regulation as described above.
• If you need assistance determining the impervious restrictions you can email the property address to planning@huntersville.org and request assistance with impervious calculations. One of our Planners will be happy to assist you. 

Are there types of structures/surfaces that I could use that would not be considered impervious?

• Slatted wood decks and walkways (such as a handicap ramp) do not count as impervious surfaces. If, however, a deck is enclosed to create a screened porch or sunroom, the roof means it now becomes impervious and must be counted towards any maximum allowance.
• NOTE: Products marketed as permeable pavers have not been approved by Mecklenburg County for use as permeable. These items will count as impervious surface. 

10. Livestock (Chickens, Goats, Horses, etc.)

May I keep livestock in Huntersville?

• The Huntersville Code of Ordinances outlines what is permitted and required for livestock in Section 94.46. If you have any questions as to how this applies to your residence or business please contact us at Ask A Planner. Please provide your parcel ID or address, what livestock type and quantity you are considering and if this is for personal or commercial use. 

11. Nuisance/Violations/Mimimum HousingCode

How do I report high grass, nuisances or zoning violations?

12. Plat/Survey/Floorplan

How can I get a copy of my plat?

• Please identify the parcel ID or address for the property and indicate you are requesting a copy of your plat. Submit your request to Ask A Planner.

How can I get a copy of my survey?

• Neither Mecklenburg County nor the Town of Huntersville retain copies of surveys. To request a survey you will need to contact a licensed surveyor.

How can I get a copy of my floorplan?

• Neither Mecklenburg County nor the Town of Huntersville retain copies of floorplans. We recommend you contact the developer/builder for your community for a floorplan.

13. Setbacks

How do I find my setbacks? 

• Please identify what the setbacks are for, the parcel ID or address for the property, the intended purpose of these setbacks and then submit that to staff at Ask A Planner.
• Examples of types of setbacks may include:
  • New construction
  • Swimming pool
  • Attached deck on rear of house
  • Attached room addition on rear of house
• Staff will research the parcel and any development restrictions related to that individual parcel and then respond to your question in the order it is received. 

14. Swimming Pools

Where can I apply for a permit to build a swimming pool?

• Building permits and issued through Mecklenburg County.

What are the setbacks for a swimming pool?

• Setbacks are a minimum of 10 feet from any property line, measured to the water's edge.
• All mechanical equipment muts also be at least 5 feet from the side and rear property lines. 
• Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement and Mecklenburg County Environmental Health have additional requirements.
• Homeowner's Associations may have additional restrictions

Is a swimming pool impervious?

• The water surface of a pool would not count toward the impervious use for the lot, but the edging of the pool and any patio would count toward the impervious use for the lot.

1. What does Code Enforcement enforce?

The Huntersville Code Enforcement staff enforces Huntersville's Zoning Ordinance within the Town limits and Huntersville's extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). 1. What is this study about?

Charlotte Area Transit System will:

• Take a fresh look at the transit vision for the North Corridor. CATS will work with Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville and Mooresville to evaluate effective transit modes and alignments that best matches current land-use and transit values.
• The study area will stretch approximately 25 miles from Uptown Charlotte to the Town of Mooresville. During the study, CATS will collaborate with towns in the LYNX Red Line corridor to gather extensive public feedback regarding values and transit preferences.

2. Why is CATS conducting this study?

At the conclusion of the study, CATS will present an updated rapid transit vision for the LYNX Red Line (along with other components of the LYNX System Update) to the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC; CATS' governing body) for adoption into the 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan.

3. How can you get involved?

Learn more about the LYNX Red Line by visiting the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) website or calling 704-336-RIDE (7433). 4. What else is happening?

In 2006, the Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) adopted the 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan. CATS is currently in the process of re-imagining various transit lines within this plan. A first step was completed in 2016 with the adoption of the LYNX Silver Line light rail alignment. Next, the LYNX System Update will revisit the rapid transit vision for Charlotte's North corridor.

In the west, the LYNS West Corridor alignment is being revisited. Originally slated for streetcar, CATS will be reevaluating the corridor due to several changes and advancements in the area.

At the conclusion of the study, CATS will present the following to the MTC for adoption into the 2030 Plan: 

• LYNX Red Line alignment
• LYNX West Corridor rail alignment
• Uptown rail integration plan for the various rail lines through Center-City Charlotte

3. How do I retrieve a police report?

The Huntersville Police Department now offers its customers the capability of viewing and printing most incident and crash reports online, saving citizens the time and effort of coming to the police department to obtain copies.

To obtain a copy of your report, go to the Police Reports page and enter the report number given to you by the investigating officer.

4. How do I resolve a Traffic Ticket?

The Mecklenburg County Trial Court Administrator and District Attorney’s Office have developed an online application that will provide eligible drivers an opportunity to resolve certain traffic citations without having to make a court appearance. It is hoped the online application will save citizens travel costs and their personal time.

Drivers must use this service at least 14 days prior to their court date or they have to attend the Administrative Court to get their citation dismissed or reduced. Also, if a driver receives a citation with two charges, the online service cannot be used.

Examples of citations that are eligible for dismissal or reduction include: 

• Certain insurance cases
• Expired driver’s license (expired less than 60 days)
• Expired inspection
• Expired registration
• Speeding citations (any speeding 20 miles per hour or more over the speed limit would not be eligible for reduction)

5. Where can I find the jail, courthouse, or the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office?

From Huntersville:

• Take I-77 South to Charlotte.
• Exit onto I-277 (Brookshire Freeway).
• Staying to the left, cross back over I-77, now heading east on the Brookshire Freeway. 
• Continue on Brookshire taking the exit for Third, Fourth and Highway 16.
• At the bottom of the exit ramp, turn left onto Fourth Street.

1. Why is the town implementing this program?

In 2006, false alarms represented 13% of the call load for the Huntersville Police Department. It has averaged 12 to 15% over the last several years.

2. What does the fee cover?

Registration fee offsets the cost of administering the program and ensures that user maintains accurate data in the system (keeps contact information up-to-date) for police response to alarm calls.

3. Does this apply to residences or businesses?

It applies to both.

4. How does the process work?

The ordinance requires enhanced call verification from the alarm company to prevent false alarms. This process requires your alarm company to make two phone calls to validate the alarm before dispatching law enforcement. The first call is to the home or business and if necessary, the second call is to an alternate number (usually a cell phone). This applies to burglar alarm calls.

5. Can I appeal a violation? If so, what is the process for appealing the fine?

Yes. Appeals can be made to the False Alarm Reduction Program at 866-589-5666.

NC Law:

3. What is the Town Citation Appeal Process?

The following information is the appeal process for individuals who believe their Town of Huntersville ordinance citation was issued in error:

You have a right to appeal a violation within 7 days of the date of the incident. All appeals are processed through the Huntersville Police Department located at 9630 Julian Clark Avenue. All appeals must be in writing.

Here’s how you go about it:

1. Mail: Request a Town Citation Appeal Form from:
   Huntersville Police Department

   Include your citation number and a brief explanation of your circumstances. Return this form to the Huntersville Police Department.
2. In Person: Present a copy of your citation with a completed Town Citation Appeal Form to the appropriate Huntersville Police representative.
3. Appeal Results Notice: You will be mailed a letter notifying you of the determination made on your citation, within 7 days from the date the notice is received by the Huntersville Police Department.

4. How do I get Precious Metals Permits?

Effective October 1, 2009 North Carolina legislators amended North Carolina general statutes 66-164 and 66-165 relating to the purchase of precious metals. As of October 1, 2009 any person engaging in the business of purchasing precious metals must obtain a precious metal permit. Precious metal dealers licensed prior to October 1, 2009 must comply with the ratified bill beginning January 1, 2010.

1. How long does the Police Officer hiring process take?

The process takes 3-6 months typically. This timeline may be accelerated by the applicant completing their application materials promptly and accurately.

2. Would I have a take home car?

If you live within policy restrictions, yes.  If you don’t live within the parameters set by policy, you would still have a patrol car assigned to only you that would have to be parked in town when you’re off.

3. How many officers does your department have?

We have just over 100 sworn officer positions allocated to us.

4. How long is field training?

New officers coming straight from BLET will be in the Patrol Training Officer (PTO) program for 16 weeks, and must be recommended for release by Command Staff.  Lateral transfer officers may have an abbreviated PTO program, depending on experience.  Lateral officers must also be recommended for release by Command Staff.

5. Do you hire out of state lateral transfer officers at your police department?

Yes.  Out of state officers must have served in a full-time sworn capacity for more than two years and not have been separated for more than three years.  At a minimum, out of state transfer officers must take the legal unit and any other identified training BLET Course and successfully pass the full BLET state examination within their 12-month probationary period.

6. Do you hire people and pay them through BLET?

We strive to select the most qualified applicants and are currently looking for BLET certified candidates.  

7. How long do I have to work on patrol before I am eligible for a specialized unit?

Most of the specialized units require at least three years of successful patrol experience.  Lateral officers with relevant training and experience might be eligible as determined by the Chief of Police.  

8. What is the police department’s policy on tattoos?

Directive 1.16 states:

“(a) Tattoos or brands may be visible as long as the tattoo or brand cannot be considered unsuitable, offensive or could bring discredit upon the Police Department.

(b) Applicants for employment and current employees are subject to having their existing tattoos, body modification, body art or brands inspected by the Chief of Police or his/her designee to determine whether they are considered unsuitable, offensive, or could bring discredit upon the agency; and are required to provide photographs of same. Photographs of tattoos located in areas covered by undergarments are not required, however must be disclosed at the time of application for employment. All applicants must complete a Body Art Screening Form and submit it as part of their application package.

(c) The Chief of Police reserves the right to reject applicants based on this policy, and require any employee to cover any tattoos which he/she deems unsuitable, offensive or may bring discredit to the police department.”

9. Can I do a ride-along with an officer?

A ride-along is mandatory for applicants who move past the stage of an offer of Conditional employment.  Ride-alongs are encouraged.

10. What documents are required for the application process?

As part of the background investigation, applicants for most positions will be required to submit the following information for review:

• Copy of Birth Certificate
• Credit Report
• Certified Criminal Records Checks from all counties in which candidate lived in the last 10 years. If candidate attended high school within those 10 years and the high school was located in a different county than candidate's residence, must include that county's criminal history check as well.
• Certified Driving History from all states in which candidate has lived in the past 10 years.
• Copy of High School Diploma or GED
• Copy of College Diploma or transcript if not graduated (if applicable)
• Copy of BLET Certificate Of Graduation (if applicable)
• Copy of Law Enforcement Certificate (if applicable)
• Copy of full DD 214 (if applicable)

Out-of-state applicants who are certified law enforcement officers must also submit an official curriculum from their basic law enforcement training academy which includes a topical and hourly breakdown of the training received.

11. Automatic Disqualifiers

Huntersville Police Officers are entrusted with the responsibility to keep our town safe from crime and disorder.  Therefore, a history of ethical and moral behavior is of the utmost importance.  Your background will be looked at very closely.  Applicants who have a history of unethical or immoral behavior will not be hired. Applicants will be subjected to an intensive background evaluation, which will include but is not limited to the following:

• You must have a history of lawful conduct.
• Your past behavior, choices you’ve made and judgement must demonstrate positive traits that will support your candidacy for the Police Officer position and reflect favorably upon your character.
• You must possess high standards of honesty and integrity as demonstrated by your dealings with individuals and organizations.  Falsifying, misrepresenting, or omitting information on any document or during the selection process will be closely scrutinized.
• You must respect the rights of all people and have an appreciation for the diversity that characterizes the town.  A history of domestic violence, physical altercations, or discourteous, abusive, or violent treatment of others may indicate a lack of self-discipline, unwillingness or inability to cooperate, or a disregard for the rights of others.
• You must have a history of making responsible choices regarding the use of drugs and alcohol.  The following are automatic disqualifiers:
• The unlawful sale or distribution of any controlled substance
• Possession or use of Marijuana or a derivative therof within the 24 months immediately preceding the date of application, even if Marijuana usage is legal in the candidate’s home state.     
• The use of any illegal drug while employed in any law enforcement position, or while employed in a position that carries a high level of public trust.
• Please call to discuss your drug history prior to applying if you feel that you may be disqualified based on drug usage. 
• Your employment and military (if applicable) histories must demonstrate the motivation and success-orientation needed to succeed as a police officer.
• Your financial history records must demonstrate responsible decisions and appropriate behavior.
• Applicants must have a driving record that reflects their demonstrated ability to safely operate a motor vehicle in compliance with applicable traffic laws. 
• Must be a United States citizen.

5. How many carts should I have?

Each resident should have

• One garbage cart  (most likely gray)

Some townhomes/condominiums do not have yard waste containers since the association has private landscapers maintain the yards.  

6. My home is newly built, who do I call to get a garbage, recycling and yard waste cart delivered?

7. Who maintains trees in front of my property?

The nearest property owner, HOA or COA is typically responsible for tree maintenance.  This includes trees within the planting strip and/or in front of the property. 

8. Who maintains my road?

Roads may be maintained by

The Powell Bill Map shows street maintenance responsibilities.  Alleys are not public streets and are maintained by the HOA.  

9. Who do I contact if a street light is out in my neighborhood?

10. When will my street be resurfaced?

Every 2-3 years the Town commissions a third-party engineering firm to evaluate all 220+ miles of streets the Town maintains.  Each street segment is given a "pavement condition rating" between 0 and 100, with a 100 being perfect condition and 0 being very poor condition.  The Town uses these scores to prioritize resurfacing efforts each year.  The Town does not resurface streets based on citizen requests, for aesthetic purposes, or to enhance property values.  

11. How can I request parking restrictions be added/removed from my street?

"No Parking" signs are added/removed on a petition basis.  Please contact your HOA to start the process.  Once the HOA notifies the Town of the request, staff conducts an on-site evaluation to determine the need for sign addition/removal.  

Parking restrictions are enforced by the Huntersville Police Department. 

12. What is the Adopt-A-Street Program?

Residents (ages 12 and older),organizations, and groups may choose to help keep our town streets and sidewalks litter-free by participating in the Town's Adopt-A-Street Program.  Whether seeking guidance on the coordination of a one-time cleanup event or choosing to commit to the longer, Adopt-A-Street program, the Town is here to help!
